Laptop Wi-Fi Keeps Dropping? How to Find the Real Cause

Network complaints are among the most common things we hear from customers working from home along OMR, and the laptop is usually innocent. Before spending money on a faster connection or a new machine, it is worth spending ten minutes working out where the problem actually is.

First, narrow it down

Three quick checks separate most causes.

Do other devices have the same problem? If your phone and TV struggle at the same times, the laptop is not the issue - it is the connection or the router.

Does it improve next to the router? If it does, this is coverage, not capacity. A faster plan will not help.

Does it happen at particular times? Evening slowdowns in apartment blocks are almost always congestion, either on your provider's local capacity or across the many Wi-Fi networks competing in the same building.

Router placement matters more than router price

Routers get put wherever the cable enters - inside a cupboard, behind the TV, on the floor in a corner. Every one of those is a poor position.

Wi-Fi is weakened by walls, water and metal. A router in a cupboard is broadcasting through wood into a room. On the floor, half the signal goes into the slab. Lifting it to roughly chest height, out in the open and as central as your cabling allows, frequently produces a bigger improvement than replacing it.

In the concrete-heavy apartment construction common along OMR, walls attenuate signal heavily. If you are two rooms and a corridor from the router, no amount of router upgrading fixes it properly - you need a mesh unit or an access point nearer to you.

The 2.4GHz and 5GHz question

Most routers broadcast both. They behave very differently and choosing badly explains a lot of complaints.

2.4GHz travels further and passes through walls better, but it is crowded - every neighbour, plus microwaves and Bluetooth devices - and it is slower.

5GHz is considerably faster and far less congested, but has shorter range and is stopped more easily by walls.

If you sit near the router, force the laptop onto the 5GHz band. If you are far away and the connection keeps dropping, 2.4GHz will be steadier. Many routers present both under one name and choose for you, sometimes badly; splitting them into two named networks lets you pick deliberately.

When it really is the laptop

Some symptoms do point at the machine. Wi-Fi that works everywhere except on this one laptop. A connection that drops when the machine wakes from sleep, which is usually a power-management setting turning the adapter off. Speeds that are dramatically lower on this laptop than on a phone standing beside it.

Common causes are outdated or wrong Wi-Fi drivers, aggressive power saving on the wireless adapter, or - on older machines - an antenna cable that has come loose from the card, often after a screen or hinge repair done carelessly elsewhere. That last one is more common than you would expect and produces very poor range while everything else appears normal.

For calls, use a cable

If your work involves video calls and it is at all practical, run an ethernet cable. Wi-Fi shares airtime with every other device and every neighbouring network; a cable does not. If your laptop has no ethernet port, a USB-C dock with ethernet solves it, and the difference on calls is immediate and obvious.

Frequently asked questions

Would a Wi-Fi extender help?

Sometimes, though a poorly placed extender halves throughput by relaying on the same band. A mesh system or a wired access point is usually the better answer in an apartment.

My Wi-Fi is fine but calls break up. Why?

Calls are sensitive to jitter and packet loss rather than raw speed. A connection that tests fast can still be unusable for calls if it is congested. Ethernet almost always fixes this.

Can you sort out my home network?

Yes. We handle router configuration, mesh setup, ethernet runs and Wi-Fi coverage problems around Navalur, OMR and south Chennai, alongside laptop and desktop repair.
