Spilled Water or Coffee on Your Laptop? Do These Things First
More laptops are written off by what people do in the ten minutes after a spill than by the spill itself. Liquid alone is survivable surprisingly often. Liquid plus electricity is what kills boards, and the second one is entirely within your control.
Do this immediately, in this order
1. Hold the power button down until it switches off. Do not shut down through the menu, which takes too long. Cutting power is the single most important thing you will do.
2. Unplug the charger. While the adapter is connected, current is flowing through a board that now has a conductive liquid sitting on it.
3. Remove the battery if your model allows it. Most modern laptops have internal batteries, so if yours does not come out easily, leave it and move on.
4. Turn the laptop upside down, open, like a tent. This lets gravity pull liquid back out the way it came instead of drawing it deeper towards the board.
5. Blot what you can reach with a cloth or paper towel. Do not press liquid into the keyboard.
6. Leave it off. This is the hard part. Do not switch it on to check whether it still works. Checking is exactly what causes the damage you are checking for.
What makes it much worse
Switching it on to test it. A board with residual moisture will short somewhere, and where it shorts is usually a component that costs real money. Every technician has seen a laptop that survived the spill and died on the third test power-up.
Using a hairdryer. Heat warps plastics, and the airflow pushes liquid further inside rather than out.
The bag of rice. It does very little for a sealed laptop chassis and gets starch dust into the vents. It also encourages people to wait several days, during which corrosion is quietly setting in.
Waiting to see if it dries out. Plain water is the best case, and even that leaves mineral deposits. Coffee, tea, juice and soft drinks contain sugars and acids that keep corroding the board long after the surface looks dry.
Why the type of liquid matters
Clean water is the most survivable. It conducts, but if power is cut fast enough and the board is cleaned properly before it dries, the outlook is good.
Coffee and tea are considerably worse, particularly with sugar and milk. They leave a residue that stays conductive and slightly acidic, and that residue keeps working on solder joints and component legs for weeks.
Soft drinks are the worst of the common spills. High sugar content, acidic, and they leave a sticky film across everything it touches.
Salt water and seawater are aggressive enough that speed matters more than anything else.
What we actually do with a spilled laptop
Bring it in switched off. We strip the machine down and get the board out, because assessing a spill without removing the board is guesswork. The board is inspected under magnification for the tell-tale green or white corrosion around component legs and connectors.
It is then cleaned properly with the right solvent and an ultrasonic process where the contamination justifies it, which lifts residue out from underneath components where a cloth cannot reach. After drying, the board is tested rail by rail before anything is reassembled.
If a component has already failed, component-level repair usually beats replacing the whole board. Where the damage is genuinely beyond economic repair, we say so plainly, and we can still recover the data off the drive in the large majority of cases.
Reducing the odds next time
A lidded cup is unglamorous and works. Keeping drinks on the opposite side to your dominant hand helps more than people expect, because most spills happen on the reach across. And if you work at a desk for hours anyway, an external keyboard means a spill lands on a part that costs a few hundred rupees rather than on the board.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I leave it before switching it on?
Do not switch it on at all. Bring it in. Drying time is not the issue - residue and corrosion are, and neither goes away on its own. A laptop that looks dry on the outside can still have contamination sitting on the board.
My laptop still works after the spill. Do I need anything done?
Yes, and this is the case people most often ignore. Corrosion is progressive. Machines regularly come to us weeks after a spill with a keyboard that has started failing key by key, or a board fault that appeared out of nowhere. Getting it cleaned while it still works is far cheaper than repairing it after.
Is liquid damage covered under warranty?
Almost never. Manufacturer warranties exclude liquid damage, and most laptops contain moisture indicator stickers that make it obvious. That is precisely why independent board-level repair is usually the sensible route.
Can you recover my files if the laptop is dead?
Usually yes. The drive is normally unaffected even when the board is not, so data recovery is possible in most spill cases regardless of whether the machine itself is repairable.
