Buying a Laptop for IT Work: Which Specs Actually Matter
We are asked this constantly at the Navalur counter, usually by people about to spend a lot of money on the wrong thing. Laptop marketing pushes processor numbers, because processor numbers are easy to print on a sticker. For most IT work the processor is nowhere near the top of the list.
RAM matters more than the processor
For anyone running an IDE, a browser with a serious number of tabs, a couple of containers and a chat client, memory is the constraint you will hit first and hardest. A modest processor with plenty of RAM feels far better day to day than a fast processor that is constantly swapping to disk.
16GB is the sensible floor for development work in 2026. 32GB is worth it if you run virtual machines, containers or heavy data work. 8GB is workable for general office use and genuinely frustrating for anything more.
Check whether the RAM is soldered before you buy. Many thin laptops have memory soldered to the board, which means the amount you buy is the amount you own for the life of the machine. On models with an accessible slot, buying less and upgrading later is a reasonable strategy.
The drive: NVMe, and enough of it
Any modern laptop should have a solid-state drive; if you are looking at one with a mechanical hard disk, walk away. What varies is the type and the capacity. NVMe drives are substantially faster than the older SATA kind, and the difference is noticeable when compiling or handling large repositories.
512GB is a comfortable working size. 256GB fills up faster than people expect once you have a couple of toolchains and some container images. Storage is one of the easier things to upgrade later, provided the slot is accessible.
Processor: adequate is usually enough
Unless you compile large codebases all day, render video or run simulations, the difference between a mid-range and a top-end processor is largely invisible in normal work. What matters more is sustained performance - whether the machine can hold its speed under load rather than boosting briefly and then throttling because the cooling cannot keep up.
That is a design and cooling question rather than a specification-sheet question, which is why very thin premium laptops sometimes perform worse in practice than chunkier machines with the same chip. It is also why a machine that was fine when new can feel slow after two years in Chennai: the cooling has clogged and it is throttling.
The screen you look at all day
Aim for full HD as a minimum and an IPS panel rather than TN, which has poor viewing angles and washed-out colour. Higher resolutions look sharper but cost battery life and, on a 14-inch screen, the practical benefit for text is small.
Matte finishes are easier to live with than glossy ones in bright rooms. A brighter panel is worth paying for if you ever work near a window.
Build, keyboard and serviceability
These get ignored on spec sheets and matter every single day. A keyboard you dislike is a keyboard you will type on for three years. A hinge that feels flimsy in the shop will be a repair in eighteen months.
Business ranges - Latitude, ProBook, EliteBook, ThinkPad - are generally built to be opened and repaired, and their parts stay available for years. Consumer models are frequently glued, use proprietary parts, and become expensive to fix. If you keep laptops for four or five years, that is a real cost difference.
Where people overspend
Discrete graphics they never use. Unless you game, do 3D or train models locally, a dedicated GPU mostly adds heat, weight and price while shortening battery life.
The very top processor tier in a chassis too thin to cool it.
4K panels on small screens, which cost battery for a difference most people cannot see at normal viewing distance.
Money moved from those three into RAM, a better SSD and a machine that is actually repairable buys a laptop that is nicer to use and lasts longer.
Frequently asked questions
Is a refurbished business laptop a sensible option?
Often it is the smartest buy at a given budget. An ex-corporate Latitude, ProBook or ThinkPad is usually better built than a new entry-level consumer machine at the same price, with a better keyboard and screen and parts that stay available.
Should I buy from a shop or online?
Whichever you prefer, but type on the keyboard before committing if you can. It is the one thing you cannot judge from a specification list and the one you will notice every day.
My laptop is three years old and slow. Do I need a new one?
Usually not. A laptop of that age that has become slow normally needs an SSD, a RAM top-up, or a thermal service because it is throttling. All three together typically cost a fraction of a replacement.
