Laptop Warranty in India: What It Covers, and What Voids It

Warranty is one of the more misunderstood things we discuss at the counter, in both directions. Some people assume it covers everything and are surprised when it does not. Others assume it is void when it is perfectly valid, and pay us for work the manufacturer would have done free. Both mistakes cost money.

What a standard warranty covers

A manufacturer warranty covers manufacturing defects and component failures that happen in normal use: a drive that fails on its own, a screen that develops a fault without being hit, a motherboard that stops working, a battery that fails outright within the warranty period.

The key idea is that the part failed by itself. Anything that happened to the laptop generally falls outside it.

What is almost never covered

Physical damage. Cracked screens, broken hinges, dented cases, damaged ports. This is the single largest category of repair work we do, and essentially none of it is covered.

Liquid damage. Universally excluded, and most laptops contain moisture indicators that make it obvious to the service centre.

Battery wear. Batteries are consumables. Capacity that declines gradually is considered normal, not a fault, and coverage on batteries is usually shorter than on the rest of the machine.

Software problems. Viruses, a corrupted Windows install, or a machine that has simply become slow.

Wear and tear. Worn keycaps, a shiny palm rest, a trackpad surface that has polished smooth.

Does independent repair void the warranty?

This is where most of the confusion sits, and the honest answer has some nuance.

Opening the machine or having a third party work on it can give the manufacturer grounds to decline a claim, particularly if they can argue the work caused the fault. Some models carry tamper-evident seals. In practice manufacturers apply this inconsistently, and a repair to one subsystem does not automatically void coverage on an unrelated one.

Our position is straightforward. If your laptop is under warranty and the fault looks like something the warranty covers, use the brand service centre first. We will tell you that rather than take the job. It costs you nothing there and it is the right call.

Independent repair makes sense when the machine is out of warranty, when the fault is excluded anyway - which covers most physical and liquid damage - or when the brand centre has quoted a full motherboard replacement for something that can be fixed at component level for a fraction of the price.

Extended warranty and accidental damage cover

Accidental damage protection is a different product from a standard warranty and does cover drops and spills. Whether it is worth buying depends honestly on how you use the machine. For a laptop that travels daily in a bag on OMR traffic, it can pay for itself in one incident. For a machine that lives on a desk, it usually does not.

Read what the excess is and how many claims you are allowed. Some policies cost more in excess than a straightforward independent repair.

Our own warranty

Every part we fit carries a written warranty printed on your bill - six months on batteries, three months on display panels, and up to a year on many other spares. It is on the bill rather than promised verbally, so there is nothing to argue about later. Warranty work on parts we supplied is done by us in-house rather than being sent away.

Frequently asked questions

My laptop is under warranty but the service centre is far away. Can you handle it?

We can carry out the repair, but if the fault is genuinely covered you would be paying for something you could have free. We will tell you which category we think you are in after the free diagnosis.

The brand centre quoted a full motherboard replacement. Are there alternatives?

Frequently, yes. Brand centres replace whole assemblies as policy. We repair the failed component itself, which on a charging fault or a power-section failure is often a fraction of the cost.

Does upgrading RAM or the SSD void my warranty?

On most business laptops these are user-serviceable and do not. On machines where memory is soldered or the panel is glued, it is a different conversation. Ask us before you buy the part.
